Time Out With Kevin Gallagher has for several years sponsored into two distributed computing projects.  These are very worthy endeavors and worth your time and computing power to contribute to.

 

The first is the SETI@Home project which is by far the single most popular of any of these.  For those of you who have seen the movie "Contact" you will know right away what this is.  This is the scientific project using the Aceribo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico to record sounds from outer space to detect artificially created signals and thus prove that there is other intelligent life in the universe.  I have personally been running this project on at least 1 computer for the past 5.5 years and I have over 8,976 work units completed for them.

The second project is the one run by United Devices in conjunction with The University of Oxford in England.  This project is looking for different drugs to fight and / or cure cancer.  The URL for this project is:

If you hate cancer as much as I do, then running this program can sure make you feel better and like you are doing something really positive to bring about its demise.

 

I truly hope you will take at look at these projects.  Both projects require a small client download and this client downloads the data that your computer will crunch, complete and send back and then download more data and the process starts all over again.

 

Both projects use the used cycles that your computer is not using anyway, so it WILL NOT slow down slow or interfere with your computer's operations.  More information about these projects can be found at their websites, in which there is an abundance of information.
