By Toby Westerman - A former Venezuelan intelligence operative stated that the Marxist regime of Hugo Chavez is hiding terror leader Mustafa Setmariam Nasar, a terror confidant of Osama bin Laden.
Johan Peña, a former member of Venezuela's state intelligence service, Dirección del Servicio de Inteligencia y Prevención (DISIP), also stated that the Chavez government is attempting to obtain uranium "for making atomic bombs."
Peña's remarks were made on the Spanish language Channel 41, reported from Madrid, Spain by Europa Press and carried on the Internet by La Nueva Cuba.
The U.S. Rewards for Justice program has placed a five million dollar price on Setmariam's head. Many terror authorities consider Setmariam to be responsible for the preparation and training leading to the bloody March 11, 2004 Madrid railway attack. Setmariam's terror resume includes training terrorists at camps in Afghanistan in the late 1990s.
Setmariam, who is also known by the names Abu Musab al-Suri and Umar Abd al-Hankim, was born in Aleppo, Syria in 1958, and gained Spanish citizenship through marriage in 1987. He traveled to Afghanistan and began training guerrillas in 1998.
Peña stated that Setmariam is "under the protection of the government of Hugo Chavez," which has entrusted the Islamic terrorist to Chavez advisor Carlos Lanz Rodriguez, himself a former terrorist-kidnapper and Communist theorist. During his Communist guerrilla days, Lanz participated in the Communist urban terror attacks in Venezuela during the 1970s, and in 1976 masterminded the kidnapping in Venezuela of U.S. business executive William Niehous.
Peña's report of Setmariam's presence in Venezuela, Setmariam's protection by the Chavez government, and the attempt of the Chavez regime to gain weapon's grade uranium, identifies a fundamental threat to the security of the United State and all other governments targeted by Al Qaeda.
The potentially deadly alliance between Marxist and Islamic fundamentalist terror is personified in Lanz, the Marxist urban terrorist, providing governmental protection to the Muslim fanatic, Setmariam.
There is a precedent of Latin American Communists seeking atomic weapons. Ernesto "Che" Guevara in 1962, following the Cuban missile crisis, told a British Socialist newspaper that if Russian missiles remained in Cuba, they would have been used against America's major cities. In 1981 Castro wanted the Soviet Union to reestablish its missile bases in Cuba.
Chavez is an admirer of the deceased "Che," maintains a close personal friendship with Castro, and praises the nuclear-tipped, Stalinist government of North Korea as a model for Venezuela. Chavez is seeking nuclear technology from Iran, and possibly from North Korea. Any flow of nuclear weapons technology to the Chavez regime will stay in Venezuela, but will fall into other dangerous hands.
America's borders are vulnerable to infiltration, and have already been probed and analyzed by Cuba's intelligence services. Cuban spies are already well aware of U.S. entry port vulnerabilities, and Cuban agents attempt to keep a close eye on U.S. military operations in the Caribbean. This information is, no doubt, available to Chavez and other anti-U.S. groups in the Latin American region.
The alliance between Islamic fanaticism and Marxist ideologues is real, and is preparing to act -- possibly with atomic weaponry. Islam and Communism should be enemies, but they share one common hatred - the United States.
To date, the U.S. media has either ignored or downplayed the Latin American Communist-Islamic fanatic threat. To continue this course will lead to tragedy for the people of the United States.
