Cuba Condemns Possible Assassination Of President Chavez

Santiago, Chile, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Union of Cuban Journalists President Tubal Paez condemned the threat of the assassination of President Hugo Chavez and called for international solidarity with Venezuelan endeavors for independence and national sovereignty.

Addressing the forum "Socialism of the 21st Century," sponsored by Punto Final weekly in Chile, Tubal Paez said the US government will do anything "seized by desperation."

"Venezuela needs the solidarity of all countries, those respecting democracy and self-determination and those wishing that nation the justice the first nation that waged independence wars in Latin America has not accomplished," maintained Paez.

The UPEC president made it clear the US administrationĀ“s "nervousness and stubbornness" may end in "madness with the purpose of seizing the Venezuelan oil."

"It is not hard to imagine the consequences of an aggression on that country, that is why they resort to assassination, " he added, making reference to recent remarks by "a fanatic close to George W Bush" inciting to assassinate Chavez.

In his speech, Tubal Paez condemned the current serious situation grabbing the world and referred to natural disasters, the exhaustion of natural resources and the increased US hostility.

He said that Cuba has proven how to implement a true social project that prioritizes peopleĀ“s health, education, housing, work and retirement.

The forum attended by delegates from Brazil, Venezuela and Chile targeted prospects of socialism given the renewed interest in that trend in Latin America and the world.
