At least five investigations are underway in Europe into the United States' handling of suspected terrorists.

In one case, a judge on the Spanish island of Majorca has referred an investigation of CIA landings at the airport to the national court, The New York Times reported. The national court must decide whether the planes were involved in the rendition program, the transfer of terrorist suspects to third countries without normal extradition procedures.

Germany and Italy are investigating the kidnapping of suspected radical Islamists by U.S. intelligence agents.

Last week, both the European Union and the Council of Europe started investigations into reports of secret detention centers in Eastern Europe. The U.N. rapporteur on torture, who said that if the reports were true the CIA is involved in a program of enforced disappearance.

The Majorca investigation began after the newspaper Diario de Mallorca reported that CIA planes were using the airport. Police in a report said that they had been able to obtain information on the planes and their crews by examining airport records and the registers of local hotels where passengers and crew stayed.
