Chavez Frias Meets Local Social Movements In Galicia And Milan

During his tour of Europe, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias has been meeting popular and left-wing organizations.

In Spain after the Iberian American Summit, Chavez Frias spent time in Galicia where he has a public meeting with local sympathizers in the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela.

News sources did not report any reference to the religious character of the city on the part of President Chavez Frias, possibly indicating that the President was not briefed on the matter.

In Milan (Italy), Chavez Frias attended a friend soccer game between Inter Milan and the Venezuelan national team eliminated last week from the World Cup.

  • The 30-minute half game was won by Venezuela 1-0.

Speaking to representatives of Northern Italian social movements, the President highlighted the rise of liberation movements throughout the world and the need for popular organizations to push the revolutionary process forward.

Referring to what is happening in Venezuela, Chavez Frias singles out the recently-created land committees that are fighting against antiquated landed estates, as well as the re-organization of worker organizations ... both are examples of social comptrollership.

New Socialism must be built, Chavez Frias states, but it will be a long road before the particularities of each region are incorporated into the process ... "I believe that for us (in Venezuela) Socialism is in essence a lot to do with Christianity."
